Moving On

"Some try to forget. Some tend to dwell. Me? I will do neither."

For me this is the best line spoken by the main character of the short film, "The Places We Should Have Gone" by the Wong Fu Productions. Breaking up and moving on are the hardest part of being in a failing relationship. But with how Becky handled hers, she ends up being happy.

The story is a short narration of how Becky end up breaking up with her boyfriend Daniel after the latter failed to show efforts to keep their relationship intact before the girl left for an internship. After sometime, Becky came back but was not completely over Daniel. To her surprise, Daniel realized his mistake and tried to reconcile with her. The ending was open but the ending line gives us the idea of how the story ended.

Like what was said on the video's commentary, the ending line was about the two common options people chose when ending a relationship. But somehow, Becky realized that those two options will not do her any good. When someone tries to forget their past, they tend to do the same mistakes they've done over and over again. While when someone tries to dwell and hold on, they fail to move on and they live in great depression.

When Becky said, she would do neither, as what Philip Wang said on the commentary, she means that 'she can move on while still remembering why'.

For me, Becky came up with an amazing solution to her problem. And in the end, though she was not able to keep her relationship with Daniel, the story end up with a smile on her face knowing that what she did is for the best.
